70. “Children’s Recreational Activities”

O God, please teach all children the holy ways for recreational activities -
That they may offer these to You as their fellowship with one another.
These activities may require physical skills and intelligence,
But may children do their best not to be better than others,
But an opportunity to speak kind words of encouragement to others as a Children of God.

May they enjoy the activities never to make enemies,
But a chance to build friendships amongst all children.
May they always be humble, never to boast their skills,
But rather respect everyone as a people with a Spirit.
These that they may enjoy each other’s company through activities worthy of offering to Heaven.

To cooperate with one another to win in the activity,
But the most humble groups are the True winners in Heaven.
All these that smiles, laughter and Joy may prevail - even to be happy for the blessings of others.
That our goal is greater than fame, material gains and rewards.

But be aware that there are many other activities that rather bring Unity to people.
That Humanity be saved from the desires for competition,
But rather teaches children the Holy Virtues of Compassion for the Needy.
As the greatest winners are those who pour their skills –
To be concerned for the Poor.
This includes all activities for physical health, but rather unity for spiritual health.

For children need to understand that physical looks and skills, status and intelligence –
Is not what truly gives Dignity and Honor to Children.
As the True meaning of winning is to put God’s Humility above our human desires to win in activities.
But learn to work in cooperation to have responsibility for Humanity.
That Children may rather bring Family Love amongst all.

You and Me, Baby

"Hey, Baby! Look at you, looking at me, looking at you looking at me," says the parent narrator of this interactive book that helps new parents interact with babies as young as two months. Big close-up photographs illustrate each phrase--"waving at me, waving at you, waving at me" and so on through smiling, feeding, hugging, splashing, peeking, all the things babies do. Lynn Reiser's minimal text promotes early language development while it helps cement the bond between parent and baby. Penny Gentieu's adorable photographs of real babies and their parents portray the warmth of that bond.

Media Type: CD
Artist: ENYA
Street Release Date: 11/12/1991

Enya's 1988 recording Watermark achieved landmark success with her groundbreaking use of multi-tracking technology to fuse new age and Celtic themes and instrumentation. The meticulous production defines her sound and achieves continuity even while weaving together tender ballads, piano pieces, massively layered vocal harmonies, and symphonic synthesizer movements. Although Enya's pristine voice isn't especially strong, her lead vocals possess a vulnerability that reflects the lyrics' sense of personal searching. From the ubiquitous, frothy single "Orinoco Flow" (which was used to hawk Crystal Light on TV) to the hard, bold edge of "Cursum Perficio," Enya's style remains fresh and engaging today. --Richard Price

Watermarking is tricky business and a rough territory. On one hand, you want your photos to be recognized as YOUR work and traceable back to your name and skill. On the other hand, and the reason I suspect not more photos are being watermarked, you want your photos to maintain its aesthetic look, because let's face it - nothing can be more distracting sometimes than a watermark on a fantastic photo. It's like going to prom with a giant zit on your face - you're dressed head to toe in the finest garments, you've gotten your hair professionally done... and blam! That blaring red pimple screams for everyone's attention. I might be digressing a bit, but sometimes that's how I feel about watermarked photos, especially watermarks that are just simply "So-and-so Photography" in big bold Times New Roman font. Even if the watermark is dressed up with a logo or presented in some kind of business-casual outfit, it's still a little distracting. Sometimes when I'm on Flickr, a watermark can nearly destroy the entire aesthetic or atmosphere of a photo that I don't want to favorite it. "I'd favorite that photo if only there wasn't that watermark... ." I say "sometimes" because very rarely, a watermark is so nicely designed and discreet that it actually fits in with the aesthetic of that particular photo. It's very rare. But I can't imagine someone designing a different watermark for every single photo solely for the sake of keeping aesthetics. That is not, and never will be, the point of a watermark.

I completely understand watermarking in various situations such as client proofing or for the intention of protecting your precious work, but when you watermark every single one of your photos that you post on facebook (like your hamster or that salad you just ate), doesn't that kind of give an air of pretentiousness? It's like saying, "I took this and it's so good that people might want to steal it so I have to watermark it..." What if (dun dun dun) you post a picture that everyone thinks is absolutely horrendous (that salad looks disgusting!) and it's got your name and reputation on it?

But what about when you just want some credit when you know people don't care as much as you do? Let's say you're at a small party or gathering. You take a bunch of photos, post them online, and get people using your photos as their profile pictures. They get tons of comments on it, saying "Sweet picture!" "Looks so professional!" Yada yada yada.. how do you feel? Do you feel like you should have stuck a "Your Photography" on the picture so that people would say "You took that picture, nice job!" and perhaps a bit of a stretch, maybe "Hey I need some professional photos done too!" Honestly, sometimes I do feel that way.

I was once hired to be a photographer for an event. I gave them the CD full of pictures, full-resolution and un-watermarked, explaining to them that I'd like to credited on whatever website they'd be posting the images on because I didn't want "Annie Hall Photography" invading John and Jane's gorgeous pose together. I saw the album on Facebook. I had to contact them again because they didn't put my name anywhere.

But hey, let's look at the dynamics of facebook or whatever popular social networking site:
1. Most people will crop the photos so that their face is dead center in the newly formed 4x3 composition. Because facebook gave us that option. Your original composition is dead. Whatever watermark you put there might have, and probably will have, been cropped out too.
2. I will safely say that a LOT people think that photos are photos. Nobody cares who took the picture. People will admire the actor but will hardly pay attention to the cinematographer, and that's why you want that watermark there, to claim your existence in the picture, quite literally.
3. Someone saw your magnificent photo floating around in cyberspace, but it had no collar on it to lead it back to its owner. Bummer, you just lost a potential client.
4. "Relax, it's just Facebook."

However bit of a stretch I could be making with the "potential client" or "grotesque scratch on that beautiful car," I'm just trying to make a point that it's a tough call, and it's extremely tricky to find some common ground between aesthetics and credits. I myself am still trying to decide - when do I watermark an image? Do I want to imply that these photos are "sooo awesome" that people might want to steal it? It's tough stuff. And with the onset of all these social networking sites and photo sharing sites, it doesn't get easier.

I really hate watermarks but I don't have much choice, have I?!

I love this picture. It tells all about her. Naughty, cheeky, fascinating little girl. I love her so much, I'll miss her so much...

Sometimes I really think I could pack and go with her. Forever... Out of here... Where we belong, in the country with wild dances and woods deep as eternity... where we can make proper friends. Where we still have some... Where are the graves of our roots and our hearts beat in 7/8.

Ops, sorry. Sentimental again. But pictures are all about it, aren't they! Memories, special records that remind us of how close we all were together...

In this brief, intense, gem-like book, equal parts extended autobiographical essay and prose poem, Brodsky turns his eye to the seductive and enigmatic city of Venice. A mosaic of 48 short chapters—each recalling a specific episode from one of his many visits there (Brodsky spent his winters in Venice for nearly 20 years)—Watermark associatively and brilliantly evokes one city's architectural and atmospheric character. In doing so, the book also reveals a subject—and an author—readers have never before seen.

Every Slot Is Taken in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living And Psychiatric Center

Here's 16 of our wonderful residence, from top to bottom, left or right:
Top row: Hazel, Alley Cat, Bam Bam the Fearful Feral, KiKi the Other Fearful Feral
Second row: Lucky, Jacqueline, Mickey, Merlin
Third row: Baby, Meg, Clementine, Tinkerbell
Bottom Row: Sweet and Sour, Gideon, Al Churchille, Taco

People always think I can fit one more in. After all, they figure, 638, what's one more. It's a very small percentage to you. But if I have one, and I take in this stray I found, I've doubled my population. So I think I better take it to Rikki's Refuge.

Unfortunately, space, at truly no kill facilities like Rikki's Refuge is seriously limited. Why? Money. The answer is simple. Money. Every day everyone must be fed, cleaned up after, preventative medicine must be given, and when they get sick they need to be cared for. And all of this requires money. There are very very few people who are willing to clean up poop and puke and be bitten and scratched while giving medications, every day for eight or ten hours for free. There's a few of us, but the numbers are very small. Much too small to maintain even Rikki's Refuge small population of 1,207 animals. So you have to add a paycheck to that bribe of karma.

This country alone still kills 6 to 8 million perfectly healthy adoptable animals every year. Nobody knows what the real statistics are, because if you fall outside the realm of adoptability, you don't get counted. If you're too young, too old, are sick, even with something easily curable like ringworm or fleas, you can be counted as sick and in dire need of medical euthanasia.

I bet every one of you would be shocked to know how many facilities that advertise and bring in most of their income by claiming to be no kill, euthanize vast percentages of their animals, by putting them into the unadoptable category.

At Rikki's Refuge, no kill does not mean we never use medical euthanasia. There are certain circumstances but we believe it is appropriate. When the time comes many animals can die comfortably at home in their own time. They are not in pain. They may look awful to us, as they often get skinny or drool. But they are happy, and still enjoying their life. But some will die of unpleasant diseases, and be terribly uncomfortable in the last few days. These are the times that we accept medical euthanasia as a necessity.

No shelter who does not work in partnership with sanctuaries can possibly be a no kill facility if they do not limit their intake to adoptable animals. A shelter is a facility where animals live in cages or kennels until they are adopted. Obviously certain types of animals are not high on the adoption scale. Diabetics, older animals, animals that have been rendered unattractive in our human eyes, perhaps missing a limb or an eye, or animals that probably for very good reason, don't wish to be social with humans. These animals cannot live in a cage in a shelter for the rest of their lives, they must go somewhere. And if it is not too a sanctuary environment, it is probably somewhere we don't think about.

Once at a sanctuary, most animals will stay there for life. A few of the elderly or chronically ill or those missing limbs will find loving homes of their own. But the vast majority of them never will. So we make as close to a homelike environment as possible at Rikki's Refuge. And the turnover rate is slow. For those of us here who love the animals, the slower the better. Usually the only way to get a new slot in the 9th Life Retirement, Assisted Living and Psychiatric Center, is when one of our friends passes away. We'd love to be able to keep the same crew forever.

If you decide to adopt an animal, make it a commitment for life. And make sure yours are neutered and spayed, and urge everyone you know to do that. It's our collective responsibility to stop disposing of animals thru murder. Leaving an animal at pound that will be forced to kill it, does not wash the blood from your hands.

Birthday Girl!

Birthday Girl!

It's hard to choose, but I think this may be my favorite photo of Ali EVER!

She was the most interesting little person... so smart and strong willed... always in a land of pretend in her mind, which is serving her so well now. She is a writer... not out of college, no graduate degree, hasn't published a book, doesn't really know what kind of writing she'll fall into, but... she's a writer and she's GOOD! I'm amazed when I allowed to read her "stuff." Really amazed! She's got a special way with language and reaching into her soul when she writes and pulling the reader in with her. I get lost when I read her work and I actually forget I'm reading my own daughter's writing... when I remember, I get goose bumps and think, "I know that person!" Authors have always been like rock stars to me... and to her!

Ali has no idea how good she is, she worries about it, but she's good... and life will steer her the direction it needs her to go, I have no doubt about that! She, like all of us when we are young, just needs to follow without hesitation, procrastination, or asking questions, like "Why?" Ali... sometimes we don't understand the why... and that's ok!

Don't you think that's the hard part of life... following where life leads us AND making smart decisions! We are what we are, but sometimes we get in our own way by worrying, asking too many question, resisting the flow, and not following where life leads.

So, to my amazing birthday girl I say...

Today and every day hold possibilities... find them and follow them! You'll never muck things up so bad that you can't work it out and very often, good things come from mistakes!

You always have a soft landing place with your dad and me, so GO FOR IT!

Love you, ALI!!!
